Jim Pugh - Conrad Herwig at Their Finest
Ok, this is another post specifically for trombone players, but what a great video it is. Just when you thought trombone was dead in the water, videos like this will totally inspire you.
I first met Jim Pugh in 1983 at a 6 week summer workshop at the Eastman School of Music. I had watched and heard him play with Woody's band in the 70's and was always inspired by his almost perfect approach to playing the instrument. Classically trained, but with jazz roots too. What a great player. He has everything together. One of the best all around players today. He can basically play anything and his control and sound are as good as ever.
And Conrad Herwig? What can you say...the guy is amazing. One of my all-time favorites. He can play loud as hell and still move around as good as Bill Watrous or Fontana. I first heard him with Toshiko Akiyoshi's band back in the 80's and his soloing blew me away. It was like Michael Brecker on trombone. After Fontana and Watrous, we need guys like this to keep it moving forward.
So enjoy some of the best jazz trombone playing around below. Great chart too!

The greatest. With a trombone section like that, who needs the rest of the band. My hat off (if I had one)
